For the Fort Worth Opera’s production of Dog Days, I acted as a system designer for Garth MacAleavey who was the sound designer and mix engineer for the show. I rarely get to collaborate with other sound related designers in my role as resident sound designer for Fort Worth Opera because there is seldom the need but my experience working with Garth created a life long friendship and made it clear that there is great value in having someone that knows a show intimately covering the gig. The Dog Days production uses body mics on all the cast members and close mics every instrument in the orchestra. Consequently, the volume of the show can be fully controlled but the cast mics must be carefully managed due to scene changes, costume changes, etc… You either mute and unmute the cast mics at the right times or the audience hears things that aren’t part of the show.
There are some fairly important sound cues which were played back with Qlab. Details to follow
