Copilot

Copilot is a software application that has changed the way I achieve many of my sound design projects. What it does is remove a lot of risk and returns time to me so I can get other things accomplished. Since time is always limited but expectations are always high, Copilot is the key to part of my success as a sound designer and I anticipate that once Copilot is available to the general public, it will revolutionize how sound designers work.

Copilot eliminates the chore of dealing with programming scenes on whatever console is being used. This is no trivial matter because scene management is a dangerous process. In order to automate how a show works on an audio console, we typically program scenes which for the most part only turn mics on and off. There may be an eq change for a hat or we may adjust output levels but for the most part scenes turn mics on and off and reassign what is included in a DCA / VCA. The concept of using scenes for this purpose, while possible, has always seemed overly complicated to me. I come from the world of analog audio where audio comes from things that spin in circles and everything is done manually. For this reason, I’ve never truly felt comfortable with using scenes to turn mics on and off.
