Qlab

Qlab runs on a Mac computer and is by far the simplest and most flexible audio playback platform I’ve ever used. The stereo version is free so there is no reason you shouldn’t get familiar with the software if you already own a Mac. You can add advanced audio features, video playback and basic lighting control via pro licenses if you need more functionality and you end up with an amazingly affordable platform for production purposely.

I personally prefer using a MacBook or MacBook Pro of some sort due for Qlab purposes because of the inherent battery backup and sheer portability.

At it’s simplest, you need a Mac computer capable of running a relatively current OSX version. Install Qlab and with just the headphone output built into the Mac, you’re ready to play back sound cues, pre show announcements, etc…

If your production needs more than a single stereo audio output, you will need to secure a Pro Audio license.

Notice that you can rent a license if your budget doesn’t allow for purchasing a license but you need features above and beyond the free version.
